Remarkably, however, in this category particular mention is made of publications by the Leiden and Am- sterdam Elzeviers, which demonstrates the growing interest in the eighteenth cen- tury in collecting small-format Elzeviers.
Dominant categories in the catalogue are theology and church history, law and politics, medicine, history, geography and travel, literature classical and modern , and French and German books. There simply is too much to fathom. But some general observations can be made. This is perhaps most visible in the law books, where clearly an attempt was made by Musaeus to bring together a representative study collection, containing a vast num- ber of texts, ranging from the late classical Corpus juris civilis and all sorts of medie- val law texts to the works of early-modern jurists from all over Europe.
Another area in which Musaeus was highly interested is religion, first and foremost Lutheranism, but also other Christian beliefs, as is demonstrated by the large number of bibles of various denominations and in many languages. Yet, there also is a sizable collection of Jesuit books p. Spinoza, in any case, appears to be absent. Musaeus was well acquainted with developments in the medical and natural sciences, through the writings of Boyle, Newton, Huygens, Boerhaave, Leibniz, and many others, but perhaps even more through the numerous scholarly journals he owned.
Greek and Roman classical and neo-Latin authors and early-modern vernacular writers from all over Europe are represented in impressive numbers and often in more than one edition. In addition, there is a good collection of emblem books p. That this vast collection also holds a good amount of rare or curious items should come as no surprise. The catalogue on the whole does not provide references to books with manuscript marginalia, but there are a few exceptions.

Occasionally, Musaeus had been able to lay his hands on manuscripts by Leiden scholars. New books could be acquired through the many publishers and booksellers, who did not only sell their own books but also an international assortment which they obtained through their many contacts abroad.
Antiquarian books were also available at some bookshops, but the great asset of the Leiden book trade was the flourishing activity of book auctioneering. Fascinating as the catalogues of these book sales are as individual documents, as I hope to have demonstrated by the example of the Bibliotheca Musaeana, the book sales catalogues collectively present a mirror image of early-modern intellectual and cultural life in the Netherlands.
